This was a school project. Most of Rachel's classmates finished theirs rather quickly, but Rachel opted to stay in from recess for several days to work on hers. She told her teacher that her father was an artist and therefore her drawing needed to be really good in order to impress him. Well, she succeeded.
The style is quite a departure from other drawings done at this time—note the shape of the eyes, nose, and lips. My guess is that a teacher showed them a step-by-step approach to drawing faces following a particular formula.
