e had not traveled far that day before he came upon a mighty knight in armor riding a magnificent steed. “Greetings,” cried the knight, “and where are you off to my lad?”
“I seek a special gift, so that I might be able to win the princess’ contest and become her husband,” said Steven.
“Oh yes,” said the knight, “I know of that contest. If I were not already in love I would surely win, for I have the most precious gift.”
“You do?” exclaimed Steven. “If this is true sir I beg you to give it to me, for you have already said that you have no need for it.”
The knight laughed. “Very well, you may have it.” And with that the knight reached into his saddle bag and produced a beautiful necklace, covered with diamonds, emeralds, and rubies. “I took it from a dragon who had no use for it,” said the knight, “but I see clearly now that it was meant for you.”
“Thank you,” said Steven, “I will never forget your kindness.” And with that, Steven turned and started the long journey that would take him to the royal palace.
