Project: Object Rendering

Assignment

Using Adobe Illustrator, create a “realistic” rendering of an object or group of objects.

Specifications:

Procedure

  1. Find a photographic reference of an object. Shiny mechanical objects like blenders, outboard motors, desk lamps, etc. work best (and look really slick when finished). But you could choose to do just about any object as long as it demonstrates a full range of values, has color, and contains value/color gradients. Avoid things that are just rectangular boxes like refrigerators or microwave ovens.
  2. Before you go any further, Get my approval. I need to make sure that it will provide an adequate challenge, without being too difficult.
  3. Scan the photo (unless it is already a digital image). I recommend scanning at 200–300 dpi, in order to see small details. Save as a TIFF.
  4. Open a new document in illustrator. Orient the page (horizontal or vertical) the direction that best fits your object.
  5. Place the image in the Illustrator document. Turn the layer that contains the object into a template layer (double-click on the layer name in the layer palette; click "Template").
  6. Make a new layer above the template.
  7. Draw the object using the pen tool and shape tools.
  8. Upon completion, save your file, and upload a copy to the portal.
