You will choose (or be assigned) a videofile format. Research and gather enough
material on assigned format to give as a presentation in class. The format
choices are:
- Advanced Authoring Format (AAF)
- Advanced Systems Format (ASF)
- Audio/Vidio Interleave (AVI)
- Digital Video (DV, DV-DIF)
- Flash Video (SWF, FLV)
- Material Exchange Format (MXF)
- Motion Picture Expert Group (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4)
- Real Media (RM)
- Quicktime (MOV)
- Windows Media Video (WMV)
Specifics
Your presentation should include:
- Who developed the format and when? Why?
- Is this format compressed? Uncompressed? Can it be either?
- What is the mime-type?
- Does this format support streaming? And if so, can you tell us how?
- Does this format require a plug-in or special application for use on the web?
- Can it be played by the "big three" media players?: (Quicktime Player, Real Media Player and/or Windows Media Player).
- Do we (Brown College) have access to programs that can create these files?
If so, which ones and how? If not, what programs would we need?
- What are the advantages and disadvantages to this format?
Procedure
- Research your format (on-line or in books &/or journals) and learn all there is to know about those bullet points (become experts).
- Create a presentation that you will present to the class. This should be done with PowerPoint or Flash or HTML. In addition to the presentation, type out the results of your findings and provide me with a copy that I can copy and give to the class (or print-out the presentation pages).
