Image File Research Project
Assignment
You will choose (or be assigned) several digital image file formats. Research and gather enough material on assigned format to give as a presentation in class. The format choices are:
- JPEG
- GIF
- PNG
- TIFF
- EPS
- TGA
Specifics
Your presentation should include:
- What does the acronym stand for?
- Who developed the format and when? Why?
- What compression type does it use (lossy? lossless?).
- What are the appropriate uses (kinds of images—photographs, flat graphics, logos, vectors, etc.)
- Is the format appropriate for the web? If not why and how should it be used?
- What are the strengths of the format? What can it do that the other formats can't?
- What are its weaknesses?
- What computer applications are needed to create one?
- Any tips or tricks to making the best use of the format.
Procedure
- Research your format (on-line or in books &/or journals) and learn all there is to know about those bullet points (become experts).
- Create a presentation that you will present to the class. This should be done with PowerPoint or Flash or HTML. In addition to the presentation, type out the results of your findings and provide me with a copy that I can copy and give to the class (or print-out the presentation pages).
- It's always a good idea to cite your sources. Include a bibliography, or a list of web links where you got your information.
