Exercise: text

Create a simple design, suitable for a screen saver or desk top, that features a quote and one or more images:

Sample one | Sample two | Sample three.

Procedure for photo-based texture.

  1. Find an interesting quote from a well-known person. Not sure where to look? Try these sites:
  2. Find one or more images (photos or artwork) that you think fit the quote. Feel Free to look online for this exercise (you could also use video game screen grabs if appropriate). The more images (and textures) you combine, the more interesting and original the finished piece becomes.
  3. Open the image in Photoshop. Create a new document 800 by 600 pixels.
  4. Create a background. Either fill the entire document (with a flat color, gradient or pattern), or place a large (800+ pixel) image on or just above the background layer.
  5. Create one or more text boxes and type (or copy & paste) your quote. Experiment with different fonts, colors, and effects. What typeface seems to go best with your quote? What color? What style? Make sure the text is large enough to read. You could put all of the text in one block, or break it up over several blocks.
  6. Make sure you credit your quote (include the name of the person who said it somewhere in your design).
  7. Place any remaining images/textures. Experiment with layering images, one on top of another. Use blending modes to combine them in interesting ways.
  8. Upon completion— flatten your image, this will insure that the type will display properly on my (& any other) computer.
  9. Save the file as yourName_text.psd.
  10. When you're finished, turn it in to me via jump drive.
