Reflective Essay
Assignment
Choose a piece of art from the Minneapolis Institute of Art's permanent collection—painting, sculpture, photo, pottery, etc. Write an essay (minimum 300 words) in which you reflect on the piece and your connection to it.
Here is a suggested structure for your essay:
- Introduction with a thesis statement
- Basic information about the piece—its name, the artist, date, culture, and style.
- In-depth information—meaning and symbolism. Why is the piece significant? What was the artist trying to achieve? (Do some research!)
- Critique the piece—what do you like about it? Color? Lighting? Composition? Technique? Play art critic.
- Your connection to the piece—why are you drawn to it? Don't just tell me that you 'like' it or it's 'cool.' Be specific, and articulate. Is there a personal connection? An artistic connection? A spiritual connection? How does it relate to you as an artist or designer?
- Conclusion
- List of sources
Hint: sections 4 and 5 should be the longest parts of the essay—I'm most interested in your response to the piece.
Other requirements
- Minimum 300 words
- Must be typed, double-spaced with 12 pt. type (use Word, InDesign or the like).
- Although this is a personal essay you should consult at least 2 sources for information pertaining to your piece.
- Don't plagerize! Use your own words or proper citations for quotes.
