COMM 300 Introduction to Multimedia
Edit to Audio
Introduction
Assignment
You will be given several short pieces of music and some random video clips. Create a short interpretive video with the provided material.
Procedure
- Copy the files provided to the Data HD (or your own hard drive).
- Launch Final Cut Pro X.
- Create a new event on the Data HD (or your own hard drive). Name it "your name—edit to audio."
- Import footage in the "Edit to Audio Footage" folder into the created event.
- Create a new project on the Data HD (or your own hard drive) called "yourName—edit to audio" as well.
- Choose one of the song snipits. Listen to the music to get a feel for the tone, rhythm and beat.
- Watch all of the clips that you have been provided. Look for eye-catching movements, dramatic expressions, exciting sequences, breath-taking vistas, whatever would look good in your video. Note that a given clip might have several such usable bits. Mark favorites. Add keywords if you like.
- Place the mouse at the beginning of the timeline and choose Edit > Insert Gap (or Edit > Insert Generator > Gap). In the dialog box that appears, set the format to NTSC SD, then click "okay." A three second gap should appear at the beginning of the timeline. It's always a good idea to add several seconds of blank leader at th ebeginning of a video project, so that it doesn't start playing right away. Later this term, we will augment our leaders with a slates.
- Select your first piece of footage and place it in the magnetic timeline, next to the gap.
- Connect the song to the first clip (note, you could connect it to the gap if you prefer, but make sure that there are a few seconds of silent gap before the music starts playing).
- Start adding addition video clips to the timeline.
Hints:- Don't use whole clips—just short, visually interesting moments. Most should last only a second or two. You can set in and out points of a clip in the source window before you add it to the main timeline.
- Let the music be your guide. Start and end clips on the beats in the music. Try to find visuals that fit the tenor of the audio.
- Use a wide variety in rapid-fire succession.
- Look for interesting juxtapositions (clips following clips).
- Upon completion, render your piece as an Quicktime Movie using the H.264 codec. Choose Share > Export Media.
- For export choose "Video and Audio"
- Under video codec choose "H264"
- Click "Next"
- On the next page name the movie "Your Name—Edit to Audio" and make sure you save it to the Data HD or your own hard drive.
- Once it is rendered, upload it to the drop box set-up on D2L.
